Drive west to the very end of W. Beach Drive and you reach The Point — where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The beach here is wide, the crowds are thin, and the views stretch in every direction.
It's one of the best dolphin-watching spots on the island. Bottlenose dolphins regularly work the channel just offshore, and shorebirds congregate in numbers you don't see on the main strand. Bring a blanket, a pair of binoculars, and no particular agenda.
